eBay has the name tag attached to it that kind of says 'eBay auctions' in fact eBay never refers to itself using the phrase eBay Auctions) or words to that effect....because...

eBay does not hold auctions. that made you stop and look didn't it?

This is where the misunderstanding comes in:

An Auction does not have a finishing time. As simple as that.

We have all seen it on television or in real life when the bidding starts to slow down and the auctioneer raises his gavel (hammer) and says "going once, going twice, come on who will give me one more bid".. and so on.. (well you get the picture I'm sure).

Anyway that is an auction.

eBay does have certain similarities, here are a few:

Auction house usually make the items to be auctioned available for viewing before the auction actually starts. Similar to eBay.

The auctioneer knows if there is a reserve price on the item to be auctioned before the auction starts and he will tell the bidders what it is before the bidding starts. The same as eBay.

If a reserve price is not put on the item that is for sale then it is sold to the lowest bidder. The same as eBay.

The auction house usually get a percentage of the closing price. Not quite the same, with an auction house the buyer also pays a percentage of the purchase price to the auctioneer eBay does not charge the buyers anything at all, just the sellers..

This is really the crucial difference between an auction house and eBay; an auction house does not know at what time an auction is going to end. If you go into a large auction house like Sotherbys or Christies (or any of the big ones) when an auction is under way there are bids coming in from all around the world being taken by auction house employees over the phone and as long as the bidding goes on then so does the auction. Not so on eBay.

If you go to eBay.com (you do not have to be a member) and enter an item in the search box and press search then you will be taken to a page selling those items, and on the far right of the screen you will see in light grey the exact time that the auction is going to finish, it will look something like this: 3d 9h 49m (3days.9hours.49minutes) or if there is less time left like this 3h 4m (3hours.9minutes) and trust me that is exactly when the sale will end regardless of who is bidding (please note that I said sale and not auction).

In closing I guess that that is why 'Buy it Now' sales are also popular on eBay because potential buyers know that if they do not buy it straight away that the item may not still be there when the time comes?
