Ealing Studios – the home of British television and film!
Ealing Studios the home of British television and film!
Tucked away in the inconspicuous surroundings of Ealing Green in West London, Ealing Studios is a famous television and film production company which has a long history in British limelight. First built in order to act as a sound studio, Ealing Studios have since become an important part of the British arts scene.
Founded in 1929, Ealing Studios was formed as a production company before it was opened in its present form in 1931 by Basil Dean. Ealing is responsible for bringing comedy geniuses like Will Hay and George Formby into the public arena and establishing television as an important entertainment form. A number of comedy films became the jewels in the crown of Ealing Studio's productions, with hits such as Hue and Cry (1947), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and The Ladykillers (1955) bringing real success to the studios.
A turning point came in 1955 when the BBC decided to take over and base its Film Department at the studios. It became a hub for the production of documentaries, dramas and programmes. Series such as Porridge (1974-77) written by Dick Clement and starring Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale and The Singing Detective (1986) written by Dennis Potter and starring Michael Gambon, became television favourites.
Since the 1990s, Ealing Studios have belonged to the National Film and Television School and a number of British films have been produced there in recent years. Zombie-comedy Shaun of the Dead (2004) directed by Edgar Wright starring Simon Pegg and Dorian Gray (2009) directed by Oliver Parker and starring Ben Barnes were big-grossing films shot in Ealing's famous studios.
Independent TV producers found a home at the office space in Ealing with off-beat productions such as The Royle Family. The BAFTA winning series was written by Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash and followed the all-too-ordinary Royle family in Manchester. Another important production was Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) which attracted millions of viewers who tuned in to see the gripping private detective series.
Aside from television and film, Ealing Studios have welcomed a number of famous musicians through their doors. Music videos have been filmed for Franz Ferdinand, who shot their 2005 single Walk Away there, and Talk by Coldplay who also filmed their video on location there.
Over 100 years of film history can be found at Ealing Studios and it is an important monument for the British film and television landscape.
