Early Adoption of Forthcoming Light Bulb Legislation

Swedish home furnishings magnate Ikea has announced they will remove inefficient incandescent light bulbs from their stores in a few weeks. They plan to bolster their LED light bulb, compact fluorescent light bulb, and halogen light bulb stock by replacing the ousted incandescent light bulbs. The more energy efficient light bulbs the better, I say.

While you may not think of light bulbs when you think of Ikea (I think wooden tables and chairs personally), they do have a decent stock of light bulbs. Perhaps nothing so massive as some online light bulb retailers, but good enough for the average consumer. Their light bulb stock of LED, halogen, and compact fluorescent light bulbs is only going to get better as time goes on and old incandescent light bulbs are replaced.

It's nice to see a retail behemoth like Ikea practicing proactive strategy. It seems clear to me that this move will place them in a great position come 2012; while other retailers are scrambling to sell off their incandescents and beef up their energy efficient light bulb stock, Ikea will already be there waiting. Embracing change this early sets them up to be the first thought in consumers' minds when the time comes.

It's surprising that more retailers are not doing this. It's only reasonable to affect change early that will put you in compliance with future regulations, and removing old inefficient incandescent light bulbs from the public eye will have a profoundly huge impact on our environmental stress. Don't forget the positive impact on our bank accounts, too!
