Matthew 24:7 and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
In the last 7 years, 6 of the 8 listed above are in the top 12 of the largest earthquakes ever, in recorded history.
They all have something in common. They lie on a circle called the "Ring of Fire", which surrounds the Pacific Ocean. Most of them also lie in the area of the deepest places on earth, called the Marianas Trench. This area is famous for the many attempts to find its bottom by "DIVERS" in heavily armored vehicles exploring the ocean's bottom. If there is anywhere on earth that can be called "divers' places" it is in the Indonesia, Japan region.
I have read Matthew 24:7 many times, trying to determine if Jesus meant "divers" or "diverse" in that statement. Most theologians interpret it to mean diverse, or widely different and scattered places. I wonder, if that is true, why do we still spell it "divers" and not "diverse".
After the recent Japanese quake and tsunami, I realized that it doesn't make any difference. What has happened in the last 7 years would apply equally well to both interpretations. Japan lies just off the Marianas Deep trench, which is deeper than Mt. Everest is high. This area represents a challenge to all deep sea explorers who try to penetrate its depths, and pressure, by diving in elaborate devices.
The "Ring of Fire" is the most volcanically active area on earth and hundreds of earthquakes of 5.0 and greater occur there every year. It seems though that the area has been even more active lately with 6 of the greatest earthquakes ever, happening in the last 7 years. These have occurred in many "diverse" places as well as "divers" places because there are no areas on earth more widely separated than the countries that border the Pacific ocean.
From Chile, through New Zealand, Indonesia, and finally Japan, quakes of unprecedented size and intensity have occurred in just the last 10 years. The only area that hasn't felt the effect of a magnitude 8.0 or greater earthquake is the northeastern section of the Ring of Fire. That area includes Alaska down through California.
Are these happenings a sign of the prophesy of Jesus being fulfilled, or a precursor to more violence yet to happen? It does seem that the intensity of these disasters has increased recently and that every area of the "Ring of Fire" has been affected except those within our own country.
Are we next?
Jesus said "These are the beginning of sorrows". He was trying to answer the apostle's question of "What will be the signs of your coming, and of the end of the world"?
Geologists will argue that we have had earthquakes of similar intensity and frequency throughout all history, but lately, so many seem to fit a pattern and intensity that is NOT matched in our records but suggest that Jesus' prophesy is being fulfilled.
With all the violence, rebellion, and natural calamities happening in the world today, it seems to many Christians that we are approaching a time described in the prophesies of the Bible and by Jesus. Will the "Ring of Fire" be "closed by" a calamity in the northeast U.S., or more disasters to follow the Japanese quake and tsunami? Jesus told us to watch for something else.
