Easy Piano Lessons - Are You Sitting Comfortably?

You have found your easy piano lessons, and are thrilled to be practicing your first piece

. Slowly you begin to get the hang of it. But then, after a while, you start to feel some back pain, your wrists and fingers tingle a little. What's happening? Well, before you get into bad habits, it's best to take one step back, and learn your very first, and a most vital, lesson - how to sit correctly at the piano.

"What's this all about?" I hear you say. How hard can this be? Surely all you need to do is slam your backside on to a chair, plonk your fingers on the keys and get on with it. In a way, yes, but do this properly from the start, and it will make things a lot easier later on.

You may see your favorite stars on stage or TV in all sorts of weird positions when they are playing. But remember that they are already trained professionals, and playing is second nature to them. They can make this look easy, piano lessons are a dim and distant memory for them. But you can be sure that when they are in the recording studio, they will have set themselves up to play in the correct posture, and here's how.

Keep your back straight. Play with a straight spine, and do not lean forward or slouch. Keep your head up, and have your sheet music in a position where you can see it easily, without needing to stoop or move your head towards it.

For comfort's sake, you should sit on a cushion or a padded piano stool (maybe one even came with your piano). Ideally the height of the stool should be adjustable, so that you can sit with your fingers and forearms slightly higher than the keys. This makes it easier to press down on them. Your shoulders, arms and fingers need to be loose and relaxed, so maybe do a few stretches prior to assuming the playing position.

Place your fingers towards the front of the keys, not to the back of the keys. You will find that this gives you a quicker response when pressing and releasing the keys.

Your thighs should be parallel to the floor. Your adjustable stool, or chair, will help with this. Your left foot will be forward, toward the pedals. Your right foot should be resting at a midpoint between the pedals and your chair.

Finally, position your stool so that you can reach the keyboards, and pedals, comfortably. You don't want to be so close that your body restricts your elbow movements. Similarly, you don't want to be so far away from the keys that you are constantly reaching out for them, or bending forward.

I know a lot of the above just sounds like common sense - and it is. But this type of thing appears so straightforward that it can easily be taken for granted. Before you know it, you have developed bad posture, and the aches and pains associated with it. Take steps at the outset to do this properly. Whilst totally easy piano lessons may not quite exist, it will make the subsequent task of mastering the piano that much easier.
