#1 Outright Scam Scholarships: This one isn't a real award; it's a scam to get your cash. Sometimes, a really slick operator will go more legal by collecting fees and then giving out a small scholarship. Sounds more like a raffle, right? But they keep the lion's share of the fees.
If you like rigged raffles, go ahead, but it isn't a good trade. Con men have set up many of this type of game. For instance, you can get the oversized scholarship check, with a request to send back the extra. Then the scholarship check won't clear. Or maybe you get a large award, but where you have to pay some kind of a fee to get the scholarship check. And you can even do this with loans, when a con artist will charge a fee to get you a low interest rate.
These are all scams, some skate on the edge of the law, some don't, but all are unethical. Preying on students and their parents is wrong. All of these require a fee up front, none have free scholarship applications. If you apply for free, what have you lost? Stick to free apps unless you want to enter a contest, or can verify that the easy scholarships are legitimate.
2. Multiple Application Preparation: handing over your money for a scholarship application could pay the person or group telling you the award exists in the first place. In some cases, they take the fee, and then process the application. You just paid for someone to do a bad job of filling out a form.
You will do better if you fill them out yourself. If you need some guidance to put together a good scholarship essay, that's okay. Having an editor review and coach your writing is not the same as paying to fill out a form for a scholarship.
3.Scholarship Seeker Services: These can charge hefty fees of hundreds of dollars. In this one, you pay a company to locate scholarships for which you qualify. Then you fill out the free scholarship applications. While sometimes useful, you often only get a small selection of awards and you have no promise of winning. Some of these operators simply charge you the large fee, then give you a list to apply to - the same list they gave the last applicant.
You can find most awards yourself through a scholarship list in a book or a free scholarship search.
Before you spend several hundred dollars, try a few free scholarship searches online to see if you can find what you need. Thousands of organizations have scholarship awards, and you can qualify to apply to some. Most will be free to apply.
4. Legitimate Scholarships That Require A Fee: Because of expenses of processing applications, or holding contests, some foundations and organizations will need to charge. Only a few categories of easy scholarships do this. Check an award out carefully before sending money.
If you put in the effort to look for scholarships, you'll find many free application opportunities. Contests, pageants, music and writing competitions, perhaps some underfunded charities, and a few others will require a fee. Take the time to look carefully, and you'll avoid most of the scams.
