Apply a good sealer on their installation and reseal on yearly basis to keep it protected. If you are buying a house which has already sandstone installed, check whether it is sealed or not. In case of doubt, reapply it without stripping off the old sealer.

Keep it free from dust. This natural stone is though a stone but is very soft in nature. Any small element such as dust and grit can scratch the floor surface. Lightly mop the floor to remove any tresses of dust. Use soft sweeper to take away the dust.

Maintain regularity in cleaning. Sandstone needs regular cleaning. Simply mop the floor with plain water for regular cleaning. Using chemical cleaning agent is not recommended for sandstone on regular basis. Just cleaning the surface with wet mop will do enough to keep it clean.


Take special care. From time to time the stone needs to be treated with a neutral cleaner that are specially meant for sandstone. It can be found in any departmental store but make sure to read and follow the uses instruction carefully. Using it in every couple of will remove any stain or layer of dust from the floor.

Remove stains naturally. Sandstone tiles when used in outdoors mostly get stains by leaves, tree sap, grass stains, mold or mildew. When they are used as countertops, cooking oil and spilled food items are the major culprit for the stains. These stains can be remove using traditional way of cleaning called - poulticing. For this method, absorbent materials are used such as talc, shredded white paper or sawdust, and mix it with a cleaning agent. Choice of cleaning agent depends on the type of stain.
