Coconut Oil No Longer a Villain

Do you know that in 2005, in my book Healthy Slim People Eat Fat, I pointed out that the main study that demonized coconut oil, was flawed. The study involved a small number of rabbits. They were given partially hydrogenated coconut oil, that had been heated and chemically treated thus becoming a trans fat. This trans fat raised the rabbits' cholesterol levels. Virgin coconut oil, which still contains all the essential fatty acids and antioxidants, does not do so. This conclusion has now been backed up by Thomas Brenna, a professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University. He did a meta analysis of all the studies, and concluded that the studies used partially hydrogenated coconut oil, so were indeed flawed. It is interesting to note that Polynesian and Sri Lankan populations, who eat large quantities of coconuts, do not have high cholesterol or high levels of coronary heart disease.

Saturated Fat Not Bad

Wonder of wonders. Professor Brenna has even said that people in his field are saying that saturated fats in general are not the villains they were said to be. He reported that the evidence that said they were bad for us is not strong. Saturated fats are, in fact, good for us. The real villains are trans fats.

Coconut Oil like Mother's Milk

Coconut oil and palm oil are the richest dietary sources of Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA). These MCFA's are used for energy production and are not stored as fat in the body. Around 50% of these are made up of lauric acid. What's so important about this is that the only other source in high concentrations is in mother's milk. It is this lauric acid that is a vital building block for our immune system.

Coconut Oil a Functional Food


Mary Enig PhD tells us that functional foods provide health benefits beyond the basic nutrients. The lauric acid, mentioned above, is formed into monolaurin which is antiviral antibacterial and antiprotozoal. Kabara and others reported that saturated fatty acids like lauric acid can inactivate such microorganisms as bacteria, yeast, fungi and enveloped viruses. One of these enveloped viruses that have been adversely affected by lauric acid is HIV.

Coconut Oil and Neurological Conditions

This story is very important as more and more people are afflicted with Alzheimer's disease. Dr Mary Newport tells the story of her husband who was stricken with this disease at the age of 58. She researched, and found that Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCT's) were showing promise with various neurological conditions.
