Eat Out, Eat Right by:Felicity Maris Modesto

Eating out can be troublesome for dieters since it is very difficult to exercise

control given the fact that other people are in charge of the food preparation. Hence, finding yourself at a loss when confronted by the many food choices in a restaurant is a typical dilemma, which can easily sidetrack you from your weight loss goals if you are not careful. However, opting to prepare your own meals at home requires you to allot timeand this may prove hard for you, especially if you have to fit it into a tight schedule.

But all is not lost. Even if you do not have any other options available but to eat out, you can still stay on the right track of dieting and manage to achieve your weight loss goals. How? Read on and find out.

Go over the menu carefully and be mindful of the descriptions for each food item.

It is best to choose food items that have more veggies in them and those that make use of either lean meat or white meat like chicken, turkey, and fish. Also, be on guard for those that are prepared using the following methods: deep-fried, pan-fried, breaded or dipped in batter, basted, creamed/creamy, scalloped, crisped/crispy, au gratin, and Alfredo. Food preparations like grilling and steaming are your healthiest bets.

Pair your meal with plain water or unsweetened iced tea/juice instead of soda or sugar-loaded drinks.

Most soda drinks are loaded with calories, and juices can also have too much sugar in them. Thus, plain water served along with the food of your choice (which has to be healthy, of course) works best. It is undoubtedly the healthiest way to flush down your meal. Either this or you order a glass of unsweetened iced tea or fruit juice.

Skip or reduce the dressings and salty condiments.

In selecting your order, be mindful of the dressings, spreads, sauces, etc. that come with them. Too often a time, these are packed with calories and fat despite their ability to enhance the taste or flavor of the food. But opting to skip them does not mean that your order would automatically taste bland. If you find it hard to get acquainted with "undressed food", then just reduce the amount of dressings or salty condiments you put in them. And it also helps a lot if you go easy on the salt. All in all, the calorie you take off still counts when you look at the big picture.

Request that your food be specially prepared according to your specifications.

Most food items are healthy choices if only they were prepared differently. And since the payment for your food would be coming out of your own pocket, it goes without saying that you have every right to request for special preparations (grilling instead of frying, less sauces and dressings, no sugar or less salt, etc.). Even if others would treat you out, you still have all the right in the world to have your food prepared the way you see fit since you would be the one to consume it. So do not be held back by shyness or embarrassment, thinking that you would be burdening the chefs with your request. Your timidity may be equivalent to a few inches added to your waistline in the long run.

Steer clear of buffets.

If you are serious about shedding the excess weight or keeping up with your healthy diet, then avoid buffets at all cost. Why? The sight of all that food served in large amounts and in the most attractive way imaginable does not only work well in whetting your appetite, but it also has enough power to make you lose control and throw your self-discipline to the wind.

But if you could not avoid them; opt for healthy food choices like grilled poultry, fresh fruits, steamed veggies, non-creamy dressings, etc. Also, it would be particularly helpful if you come to the buffet already full, so you stand a better chance against the overwhelming food temptation laid out before you.
