China is known for many different things. The Great Wall of China, which stretches for thousands of miles across the country. The ancient Terra Cotta Warriors found near Xian, China. Tiananmen Square, which is the location of the tragic Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989. And, a population of over 1.3 billion people.

One of the lesser known sites in China is called the Wangfujing Shopping Area. Now, there is no shortage of places to shop in China, but Wangfujing is truly a unique experience.

It's located in the city of Beijing, in the Dongcheng district, which is east of the Forbidden City. It's one of the oldest and most famous commercial areas in Beijing. Although the area is very old, it was completely renovated in 1999. The result is a mixture of modern and traditional Chinese style.

The Wangfujing Shopping Area is an outdoor shopping area located on Wangfujing Nankou near the Sun Dong An Plaza. The streets are closed off to vehicles so pedestrians crowd the streets both day and night. There are many unique stores located at Wangfujing, including Shengxifu Hat Store and the famous Wuyutai Tea House. There are also some not so unique stores, such as Nike and Rolex.

If you'd like something to eat, then be sure to stop by some of the traditional Chinese restaurants or you can always eat at the local KFC. A common treat you will find at the Wangfujing Shopping Area, as well as many other places, is "Tang hu lu," or candied fruit.

This is a great area to visit during the day. You can satisfy all of your shopping needs. However, at night is when the area really comes to life. One of the many attractions of this area at night is the glowing neon lights from all of the stores, shops and restaurants.

The main attraction at night is the Wangfujing Night Market. The night market is located just off of the main shopping street. It is a huge shopping area that has street vendors selling many different Chinese products and souvenirs. There are also numerous food vendors lining the narrow aisles of the night market.

The food vendors sell everything from deep fried insects, to scorpions on a stick. If you are not accustomed to eating exotic foods, you will enjoy, or be disgusted by, the people attempting to eat the many unique foods available. Not only do they have live scorpions on a stick, you will also find seahorses and silkworms, among many other rare foods. It can be a challenge just to identify some of the meats on display.

Wangfujing is a must see destination if you're going to Beijing China. Consider planning your visit so that you can shop during the early evening and try exotic snack foods at night. The crowded night market is sure to be a memory you won't soon forget.
