If you checked what most self-proclaimed "hard gainers" had to eat you would find
that they are really not taking in enough protein to grow which is why they are unsatisfied with the gains (or lack thereof) they are seeing
The best thing you can do is to eat "clean" high protein meals every 2-3 hours to keep your body's fuel levels at optimum.
Here is a great-suggested diet for hard gainers
Stick to this for 6 weeks or so and you will see definite growth
Breakfast: 6 egg whites, 3 whole eggs scrambled, 1 cup of oatmeal
Morning snack: protein shake, a banana
Lunch: grilled chicken with whole wheat pasta and a garden salad
Afternoon snack: protein shake and an apple
Dinner: steak and yams (sweet potatoes) or steak and rice
Before bed: 1-2 cups of low fat cottage cheese (Cottage Cheese is a Casein protein- meaning it's much slower for your stomach to digest than whey protein.
If you can shoot for whole-wheat pasta and brown rice as opposed to regular pasta and white rice since they do not give you an "energy spike" but more of a constant supply of energy.
The good thing with eating healthy is it is actually a lot cheaper than eating junk food
A bag of brown rice is no more than $2.00 a box of whole-wheat pasta is less than that.
Quick Oats - you can buy a massive container of them for $3.00 or so (depending if you buy a generic brand or Uncle Toby's.
Eggs are probably still the cheapest form of protein you can buy
