Eating Away At The Sadness-combating Depression
You may have seen commercials depicting people who are sad; struggling each day for normalcy and just getting out of bed seems like an impossible feat
. For many, this is their reality. It's like any other disease that impedes having a healthy existence. Visits to the doctors mostly result in walking out with a prescription for antidepressants; however, there may be another alternative without having to take prescription medication.
The alternative just may be in the foods that are consumed. Remember the food pyramids we were shown growing up? It can be as basic as healthy eating. One observation from the medical community is that serotonin is one of the key chemicals affecting the brain and our moods. Too low of a serotonin level will negatively affect your moods and sleep functions while an adequate level can keep depression in check.
The next trip to the market should include foods that will raise your serotonin levels. These foods will contain tryptophan which is an amino acid your body needs to produce serotonin. Chicken, pineapple, yogurt, turkey, bananas and cheese contain this amino acid. Keeping serotonin levels elevated will enhance your moods more positively and life at life with a better view.
It has also been found that not only does tryptophan help but so does vitamin B. Vitamin B can also keep depression at bay. Choosing foods such as whole grains, leafy vegetables, brown rice and organ meats can be just the key to reducing stress and depression. Good carbohydrates can assist in increasing insulin levels which will positively affect serotonin levels within the body.
Depression may only be felt for a day, a week or for longer periods of time. No matter the length of time it can be debilitating for some. Watching your diet may get you out of the slump sooner rather than later. Just as important as eating the right foods it is essential you avoid foods that aren't helpful such as foods containing high amounts of sugar, marbled meats and egg yolks. Having a proper diet is beneficial to you overall not just in helping to fight depression.
