Eating Disorders In Children

There is a fine line between eating disorders and weight loss

, especially with teens. An eating disorder is an illness, it will affect your whole life. Bulimia, anorexia, and binge eating are a few of the most problematic eating disorders. They bring around extreme feelings, behaviors, and attitudes about food issues and weight loss. These disorders cause serious physical and emotional problems.

Bulimia develops in mid-teens. It begins as a way to lose weight. Binge and purge are what young people begin to do with bulimia. Bingeing is when a person eats a much larger then normal amount of food in a very short time frame. Usually purging is vomiting, but the other ways to purge are , i.e., laxatives, diuretics, and excessive exercise. These people feel the need to purge after bingeing because they fear gaining weight and feel the shame over the loss of control of overeating. Signs to look for: strict dieting, concern with body image, making excuses to go to the bathroom right after meals.

People have a harder time understanding anorexia. It's a serious, lifee-threatening illness characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss. Also anorexia begins during adolescence, frequently at the onset of puberty. Its victims have an abnormal fear of gaining weight and an extreme drive to be thin. What to look for: cutting back on food, a change in eating habits, obsession with food and dieting. The victims eventually become underweight to extremes and still think they are fat .

Binge Eating Disorder is newly recognized as an eating disorder. Binge eating is categorized as a person eating a huge amount of food. They usually eat till uncomfortable, eat quickly, binge secretly, and then feel guilt and shame. Food is their comfort. Most people with this eating disorder are usually overweight and depressed.
