Eating The Right Nutrients Can Fight Acne

By now you know that eating foods that are high in fat

, salt and sugar can be harmful to your health. They are also harmful to your skin's health. Inflammation, a leading cause of acne, gets no relief if foods containing these damaging ingredients are part of your diet. If you are an acne sufferer, it is even more important that you avoid eating any processed foods or those containing saturated fat. But that does not mean your food options are limited. There are many foods with several important nutrients that can not only improve your overall health, but also do wonders for your problem skin.

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is often touted as a way to ward off colds and flus, but it also protects your skin's cell membranes as well as from scarring. Foods rich in Vitamin C include broccoli, celery, tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, mango, cranberries, strawberries, pineapple, oranges, melon and kiwi. Citrus fruits contain what is known as bioflavonoids which serve as an anti-inflammatory. It is found in the white rind part of the fruit.

Vitamin E: When your skin is damaged and scarred from acne, vitamin E helps the skin heal. Its anti-inflammatory activity is also extremely helpful in preventing acne from occurring in the first place. Vitamin E can be found in almonds, olives, olive oil, broccoli, blueberries, hazelnuts, peanuts, peanut butter and spinach.

Selenium: This antioxidant protects your skin's cells from the damage caused by breakouts. Selenium also helps skin keep its elasticity. When taken with vitamins A and E, it becomes an even more powerful antioxidant. To get your required fifty-five micrograms of selenium a day, try eating whole grains, poultry, meat, lentils, fish, garlic, cashews, Brazil nuts and sunflower seeds.

Zinc: If you ever had a baby, you know that zinc is the main ingredient in most diaper rash creams. This is because zinc is highly effective for treating common skin conditions--including acne. It is an antioxidant that protects your skin and also speeds up the healing process of your skin. It even works to prevent premature aging. Foods with high amounts of zinc are beans, poultry, peanuts, fish, wheat germ and seeds (pumpkin, squash and sesame).

As you can see, there is a myriad of foods that are rich in powerful nutrients that can protect your skin against acne and help heal your skin after an acne outbreak. When consumed on a regular basis, these foods will have your skin looking like acne was never a problem in the first place.
