Edakkal Caves A Glimpse Of Keralas Rich History
Keralas perfect climate could be one reason why no one living in the city is ever in a hurry to get anywhere
. Known as the easy paced-city of India, almost everyone who visits these lush lands waxes poetic about Keralas hospitality. Blessed with stunning natural treasures such as waterfalls, meandering streams, fertile grasslands and soft sand beaches, Kerala has always been a land that has caught the eye of travellers and traders from time immemorial.
Paying homage to Keralas stunning natural beauty are the Edakkal Caves. Known thus because the formation of the cave is due to a massive boulder that has wedged itself over a cleft in the rock, the name literally means a stone in between. The inside of the cave is formed in split level and the light which enters the cave is slanted through a gap in the roof where the boulder misses the wall. The caves have attracted many famous names over the years, drawn through legends and folklore. It was given the name Ambukuthimala because it was believed that the caves were formed by the striking of two arrows fired by the two sons of Sri Rama. Until recent times Pilgrims also make their way towards the caves annually in performance of a ritual in the name of the goddess Mudiampilli.
The caves themselves were discovered in 1890 by Fred Fawcett. This discovery by the then- superintendent of police led to conclusions of Neolithic habitation within the caves that dated back to over a period of 5000 years. Remnants of prehistoric drawings and etchings were discovered on the walls of these caves. These images were the first pieces of evidence of abraded drawings discovered in India. Fawcett, who was a prehistory enthusiast, surmised that the drawings had been made by a tribe called the Kurumbars, although the evidence is not conclusive.
