Effective Garage Organizing

Effective garage organizing is about using your time and your tools in the best possible way

. Let's face it, none of us wants to spend a weekend or several weekends sitting around organizing our garage. There are far more fun ways to spend your free time. So how can you get it organized in the least amount of time possible?

A little planning can be a big help. Sit down and write out the different categories of things in your garage. Things like lawn equipment, chemicals, and tools should all be on this list. Under the main categories, write down any subcategories there might be. If you have a specialized set of tools, that should be a subcategory under tools. You may need to look through the items in your garage to get a better idea of all of the different categories you need to list.

After you have this list, the next garage organizing step is to plan out where each category you wrote down will go. You can do this by writing down the category name on a piece of paper and just taping it to the wall or cabinet where it will go. You can also draw out a rough sketch of your garage and write down where each category will go on that drawing.

Now you just need to put everything where it belongs. As you are organizing everything, be sure to get rid of those things that you no longer use. As you handle each item to put it where it belongs, ask yourself if you really use and need this item. But make the decision quickly. Do not spend more than 30 seconds on any item. Be sure to also properly dispose of any old paint or chemicals.
