Effective Keyword Relevancy Analysis
One thing that often gets overlooked in on-site SEO campaigns is keyword relevance with page content
. A lot of webmasters believe that simply loading there meta tags and web-page content with targeted keywords is the way to appear in searches for those keywords. One of the biggest mistakes I see in my clients sites is stuffing the tags with keywords. Which the importance of these keywords are debated among SEO professionals today anyway.
The first step to optimizing keywords with your site is to pick eight to ten targeted keywords that describe the content on your site. It is sometimes important to research the industry you are in and try to figure out what exactly users are typing into search engines to find sites of your type. This is really important for conversion rate. Please note that although it is difficult to narrow to only ten most search engines, cough Google cough, do not recognize any keywords listed after the tenth one. Another tactic Ive seen is to include common misspellings of terms you are targeting. I am not even going to comment more than to just say, no.
Once youve identified your keywords or key-phrases and modified your keyword tags your ready to start analyzing the relevancy of those words to the content of your site. There are hundreds of sites on the internet that will analyze your website and give you percentage relevancy; However, the best way is to use the tools at Google Webmaster Central.
Now for the annoying part of keywords relevancy analysis, Although i cannot find an exact quote from search engine representatives there are a lot of estimations done on how often your keywords/key-phrases should be mentioned within your web-page. The incorrect assumption is that the more your keyword is flooded through out your sites content the better. This is very far from the truth and its possible search engines could punish you if your number is really high (you will appear to be spam). So what is that magic percentage? Simple answer is there isnt one, but most people believe its in the 2% 6% range. This simply means if you have a keyword in your tags, that keyword should appear in about 2% 6% of your websites content.
If you search Google for a website SEO analyzer several of them do keyword density checks. You want your most important keywords to be your highest percentage words and you wont those between 2% and 6%. If you are very close to the bottom or top end of this range I would not worry too much about it.
Hopefully youve read this far so I can tell you that most major search engines blatantly ignore the keywords tags altogether because of abuse issues. Well that doesnt mean you dont want them because there are a few search engines who still find interest in these tags. Also the point of this whole article is how to obtain a good percentage of targeted keywords through out your website because this is how most major search engines consider your site to be relevant with search queries. You also need to follow these guidelines to avoid being penalized by search engines for spamming keywords. Most search engines use parsing tools to verify that your keywords are joined together with meaningful filler words to make meaningful sentences.
