Another year is starting, and with it comes a huge new wave of college freshmen

. You get to enjoy the experience of living in the dormitories, meeting loads of new people, and enrolling in classes that actually interest you.

But if your experience is anything like mine was, you will soon realize that university-level courses are much more demanding than those in high school ever were. I thought that I could continue to effortlessly skate by on my easy smarts, but I soon realized I needed new strategies for studying so that I wouldn't get left behind. Let me share those with you right now.

One of the primary keys to effective studying is blocking out enough time in your day to actually do it! Mom's not around to make sure that you get your homework done before you relax or go out with friends, so self-discipline is crucial.

It is wise to designate 15 to 20 minutes to review lecture materials for each class at the end of the day to make sure that you are retaining the things you hear in class. Then proceed to the assigned reading. Go through it as slowly as you need to in order to capture the important points.

Always read with a pen or pencil in hand to help you jot down notes or to mark the most significant parts to remember. I majored in English, and I found this was a vital step even when reading ordinary literature. Just write down whatever comes to might if you aren't sure which portions you ought to recognize as important.
