Effective Team Building Activities

Most businessmen are aware of the various events that training companies hold to

try to encourage people to work together, such as paintballing days, archery competitions and film making projects. However, unless they have made the effort to research the topic in depth, it is unlikely that they will have the first clue as to which activities are really effective and which are simply a gimmick that companies use to attract attention to the services that they offer.

A closer look at the subject will reveal that the organisation and planning that goes into any particular event is just as important, if not more so, than the event itself in many cases. A good coach should be able to make sure that participants work together to achieve the objective of the activity that has been organised and as long as everybody knows what they are doing, there is a reasonable chance of the event succeeding in its aim of fostering cooperation between co-workers. On the other hand, no matter how interesting or innovative a team building event may be, if it is poorly planned then it is unlikely to have the desired effect.

Nevertheless, it is probably fair to say that some activities are more effective than others are, especially when analysing the results by industry sector. Male dominated businesses usually tend to lean towards the type of events that are centred on testosterone-fuelled action such as negotiating difficult terrain at high speed in 4-wheel drive vehicles. The fact that the participants look forward to the event and are keen to display their prowess in this activity naturally helps to focus their attention on successfully completing the tasks that they are set. The real test of a good trainer is whether peoples desire to show off their individual skills can be harnessed and channelled into helping the group complete whatever tasks it has been set.

Arranging a day out for your employees is always good for morale, even if it does not involve the type of activities that have been discussed in this article. However, it is well worth looking into arranging a group event to make the most of the time that your workers spend together whilst they are away from the office for the day.
