Effective Use Of Eye Drops
Eye allergies are usually hereditary and occur due to an allergic response when eyes come in contact with certain substances
. Allergic reactions take place when your eyes overreact to a substance that it considers to be harmful. At times, the substance may not be harmful to your eye. For example, most people complain of eye allergies when their eyes come in contact with dust.
Even though certain dust particles may not be harmful, they could cause eye allergies. Some of the problems that are associated with eye allergies are asthma and conjunctivitis. Many people who suffer from eye allergies use eye drops to provide them quick relief. Here are a few tips on how to use these drops:
a) Make sure you wash your hands before you use these drops. It is a good idea to sit or stand in front of the mirror when you use these drops.
b)Remove the bottle cap and bend your head backwards. Hold the dropper above your eyes and gently pull-down your lower eyelid.
c)Gently squeeze the bottle to ensure the prescribed number of drops is administered. Make sure the dropper tip does not touch your eyelashes, eyes or any other part of your body.
d)Once the required number of drops is administered, keep your eyes closed for at least 5 minutes.
e)Clean the excess liquid that falls onto your checks with the help of a tissue paper.
f)Repeat the process for the other eye if drops are prescribed for both eyes.
g)If you are prescribed more than one preparation in a day, wait for at least 10 minutes before you use the other preparation. When you wait for a few minutes the first drop settles in and is not washed out when the second prescription is put in.
At times, people who use these drops do not know how to store and use the drops. Before the top of the bottle is opened, these drops are free from bacteria. Once you open the drops, make sure you store it in a cool place that does not get much sunlight. Avoid touching the nozzle with your hands as it promotes the growth of bacteria. Never let anyone use your bottle nor should you use a bottle that is used by someone else.
Eye drops should be ideally used within 4 weeks of opening the bottle. Once this period expires, make sure you thrown out the bottle. People must not use these bottles after the expiry date as they become infected. Some people complain that when they use these drops they feel the taste of these drops in the mouth. This is normal as tear ducts drain some eye drops to the nose. If you are allergic to some drops, make sure you inform your doctor.
Avoid using contact lenses when using these drops as it may contaminate your lens. Make sure you store the bottle in a safe place where your children cannot reach it. It will be prudent on your part to visit your doctor if you feel prolonged irritation in your eyes after using these drops.
