Effective Ways To Prevent Kitchen Fires
Kitchen fires have always been one of the leading causes of home fires not only in this country but in other parts of the world as well
. Since the kitchen is bustling with all types of fire hazards and risks, it is only right that you ensure proper kitchen fire safety to prevent this unfortunate accident from happening in your very own home.
Here are some effective kitchen safety tips that will keep your family and home safe from this disaster.
Keep all cooking equipment and electrical appliances in good condition. Check the cords, wiring, and thermostat. If there is anything that seems to be acting strange, like the oven toaster or gas stove, stop using these equipment right away and bring immediately to a professional for repair and servicing.
Keep your kitchen clean. Accumulated waste can be a fuel risk. Grease buildup can also be a cause of fire. Be sure to wipe everything clean from the kitchen counter to the stove, to the microwave.
Unplug electrical appliances that are not in use. This may include toasters, mixers, microwave, oven, coffee maker, and so on. Remember that they continue to draw and use electricity even when turned off.
Do not install a smoke detector inside the kitchen. Steam and smoke from cooking can instantly trigger the alarm and you do not want to constantly be at your feet whenever you are cooking. Instead, place the alarm near the kitchen so you can still be warned if there is fire.
Use caution when using heating and cooking equipment. Never leave the stove unattended while cooking, even for a short while. If the phone rings or the door bell sounds, turn off the stove first before you answer.
Never use metal in the microwave. Not only can this damage the microwave, it can also start a fire.
Wear the proper attire while cooking. Refrain from using long sleeved shirts in the kitchen as these can easily catch fire.
Equip your kitchen with the right fire safety devices. Fire blankets are some of the most common safety device used in kitchens. Aside from this, it would also be smart if you have a wet chemical fire extinguisher, which is designed to put out fires that involve hot oil, grease, and fats.
Do not allow children to play in the kitchen. The kitchen is a dangerous area for kids to play in. With boiling water, heated pots, and electrical equipment all around, one false move can lead to disastrous consequences. Be sure to be firm with your kids in telling them that this area is off-limits for playing and goofing around.
Keep flammable things like pot holders, paper towels, and dish towels away from the stove. Dont place the stove near curtains or furniture.
Cooking in the kitchen is fun and enjoyable. Whipping up food feasts is exciting. Just make sure to keep your kitchen activities safe from possible fire risks by keeping these kitchen safety tips in mind.
