Egypt is a country in the north-east Africa and south-west Asia. In the east Egypt borders on Israel, in the south on Sudan, in the west on Libya. In the north Egypt is bounded by he Mediterranean Sea, in the east by the Red Sea. The area of Egypt is about 1001450 km2. Agricultural lands are less than a tenth of Egypt territory. This is the valley of the Nile delta, a few oases in the desert and the lands along the Suez Canal. More than 90% of Egypt territory are occupied with desert lands, including the Libyan Desert, part of the Sahara Desert and the Arabian (Eastern) Desert. There is a vast sandy area, called the Great Sand Sea in the Libyan desert. There are several basins in it, including the depression Cattaro with an area about 18000 km2, which reaches a depth of 113 m below sea level - the lowest place in Africa. Most of the Arabian Desert is occupied with a plateau height of about 600 m, there are few mountains on its eastern edge, reaching an altitude of 2100 m. There is the Nubian Desert in the extreme south, along the border with Sudan. The Sinai Peninsula is also occupied with a desert in the north and cliffs of more than 2100 m high in the south, on the Red Sea coast. The highest point in Egypt, the mountain Jabal Katrina (2637 m) is located on the Sinai Peninsula. It was this place, where according to the Old Testament, Moses received the Ten Commandments. The Nile flows through whole Egypt from the Sudanese border to the Mediterranean and almost along its entire length (about 1545 km) it's located in a narrow valley surrounded by cliffs. There is an artificial lake Nasser, formed by the Aswan dam in the south of Egypt. In the north, at Cairo, the Nile delta is formed with a width of about 250 km. Geographically and historically, Egypt is divided into Upper Egypt - the territory of the delta, and Lower Egypt - a narrow valley (23 km) to the south from Cairo.
