Eight Essential Amino Acids

Eight Essential Amino Acids

The natural health researchers at Institute for Vibrant Living (IVL) have investigated the natural need by the human body for amino acids and their functions. Here is their report:

It All Starts Here

Considered the building blocks of protein, amino acids provide important roles in the body including cell production, tissue repair and the transport of oxygen.

They also help protect the body from viruses and bacteria. Essential amino acids are not produced in the body and must be obtained from food or nutritional supplements.

There is a difference of opinion on the actual number of these amino acids but in general, there are thought to be eight.

These are isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.

Here is a detailed explaination of each:

Isoleucine - Required in the production of hemoglobin, isoleucine is a major component of red blood cells and is important for clotting in the case of injury. Isoleucine is also known for its ability to boost athletic endurance and enhance the repair of muscle tissue, making it an essential ingredient in the diets of serious athletes and body builders. Foods rich in isoleucine are fish, meat, eggs, lentils, peas, soy, nuts and seeds.

Leucine - This essential amino acid supports healing and enhances the production of growth hormone. It also helps burn visceral fat, which is found in deep layers of the body and is not very responsive to dieting and exercise. Leucine also works in combination with isoleucine and valine to repair muscles, regulate blood sugar and boost energy. Good sources of leucine are whole wheat, brown rice, beans, meat, nuts and soy.

Lysine - Known for its antiviral properties, lysine is an important component in the production of antibodies for a healthy immune system. It is also central to the production of growth hormone. Foods high in lysine are eggs, cheese, fish, milk, red meat, spinach, potatoes, soy products and yeast.

Methionine - This amino acid helps to break down fats and generate muscle in the body. Methionine contains sulfur, which is required for the production of glutathione, the body's most plentiful antioxidant. Good sources of methionine are beans, eggs, fish, meat, garlic, lentils, kale, cabbage, soybeans and yogurt.

Phenylalanine - An important component for a healthy nervous system, phenylalanine helps to combat depression. Preliminary studies have found that phenylalanine may also be helpful in the treatment of vitiligo, a condition which causes white patches (de-pigmentation) on the skin. Foods rich in this amino acid are beef, poultry, pork, fish, milk, yogurt, eggs, soy products, some nuts and seeds.

Threonine - In addition to building strong bones and teeth, threonine aids in the function of the heart and liver and that of the immune and central nervous systems. It is important in the production of glycine and serine - amino acids that help produce collagen, elastin and muscle tissue. Food sources of threonine are meats, fish, dairy products, eggs, bananas, carrots, leafy greens and lentils.

Tryptophan - An essential ingredient in the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, tryptophan helps to relieve migraines and depression. Foods rich in tryptophan are flaxseed, salami, lentils, turkey, eggs, spinach, sesame seeds and bananas.

Valine - Essential to muscle development, valine works by helping to provide glucose to the muscles which boosts energy for intense physical activity. Valine also helps to stimulate the central nervous system and is needed for proper mental functioning. It works with isoleucine and leucine to promote normal growth and repair tissues in the body. Foods containing valine are meats, dairy products, mushrooms, lettuce, celery, peanuts and soy.

In Summary

Essential amino acids are vital to a healthy body. As excess amino acids are not stored by the body for future use, it is important to consume a well-balanced diet on a daily basis. To be completely protected, try a daily supplement containing all eight essential amino acids.
