Electric Cars - The Future Or an Amusing Novelty

With traditional fuel prices soaring, and the pollution worries associated with gasoline powered engines, many people are looking for an alternative

. Hybrid cars that use a combination of fuel and electric power may be kinder to the environment, but the cost of the vehicle itself, coupled with the fact they still need fossil fuel, make them at best a stopgap in the search for a true alternative. So what is the answer to cheap pollution free travel?

The answer looks to be electric power or hydrogen fuel cell power. The hydrogen fuel cell, whilst it looks promising, is currently not the answer, especially as commercial hydrogen production still relies on fossil fuels. So the only option open today to the cost and environmentally aware motorist is the electric car.

What do you imagine when you picture a pure electric car? The truth is many of you probably think golf cart, or slow moving boxy vehicle that moves at a fast walking pace, and stops after about 10 miles of travel. That may have been true in the past, but not any more.

With improvements in electric motor construction, and more significantly, battery technology, it is now possible to produce a normal sized car or light truck. One that accelerates as fast as a regular car, and reaches top speeds that are more than sufficient for highway travel. Plus they have a range between charges of 100 miles or more.

You can charge your car by simply connecting it to your home power circuit overnight, or any domestic power outlet for that matter. It will cost a lot less than gasoline, plus overnight most utility companies provide a reduced tariff making it even less expensive.

Many commercially available electric vehicles currently cost more than their equivalent traditional fuel vehicle, but with time I am sure that the cost will reduce. However with basic mechanical knowledge, and some expert guidance, it is possible to convert your current car to electric. Even if you are on a tight budget, you can complete a home conversion for a surprisingly small amount of money.

Electric cars are definitely the future, and can be a real viable alternative today. Converting to electric will save you money, and help save the planet at the same time. what reason do you have to not go electric?
