Electric Light Bulbs Versus Halogen Bulbs

? If so, I strongly suggest that you buy halogen bulbs rather than a typical electric light bulb or a fluorescent bulb. Halogen bulbs are much more effective and they will last in the long run as opposed to traditional electric light bulbs and fluorescent light bulbs.

The problem traditional electric light bulbs face is their low efficiency. The majority of light bulbs can't last for over 1000 hours. The power used by these bulbs is also high. Aside from consuming a relatively high amount of power, these light bulbs also tend to heat up the room a lot.

Here's the way a typical electric light bulb works...

Argon or nitrogen are the inert gas that electric light bulbs are filled with. A thin frosted glass envelop encloses the light bulb. The burning filament called as tungsten is usually present at the center of the bulb.


The burning filament is made up of a tiny metallic wire made from tungsten. The metal tungsten is utilized here due to its high melting point - two thousand five hundred degree centigrade.

Incandescence is the process by which an electric bulb lights up. It occurs when the tungsten filament delivers high resistance as a result of heat buildup when electric current passes through it.

The resistance supplied will cause the bulb to glow.

As a result of the constant heat accumulation the tungsten filament will vaporize causing the light bulb not to last very long. The continual heating contributes to loss of tungsten filament.

When the tungsten filament burns out thin, the quality of light decreases.

With only a few minor differences in some places, in essence all kinds of bulbs function in a similar way. The main reason electric light bulbs aren't favored these days is due to their inefficiency. They are quite inexpensive to buy. But they have lots of problems related to them for example...

- They fail within 1000 hours of use

- Excessive heat is produced near the bulb. It acts similar to a central heating facility.

- They have a higher usage of power

On the flip side, halogen bulbs possess a greater efficiency despite of making use of the same principles. Much like electric bulbs, halogen light bulbs make use of a tungsten filament as well.


But the tungsten filament in a halogen bulb is encased inside a quartz glass.

The quartz glass encloses the whole tungsten filament. Unlike electric bulbs which are typically filled up with non-reactive gases such as nitrogen and argon, halogen light bulbs are filled up with a combination of iodine and bromine gas (halogen atoms).

When in contact with heat the halogen atoms reacts with the tungsten filament near the quartz surface area. Upon cooling down, the tungsten atoms are recaptured by the filament. If quartz glass hadn't been used, the vaporized tungsten atoms might have been deposited on the glass surface area and resulted in formation of a darkish layer.
