Electric Vehicles: Norway Will Ban Gasoline Cars On 2015

Last week came the news of Norway stating that from 2015 all production and commercialization

of gas powered cars will be banned throughout the national territory, a new demonstration of the high awareness level in the Nordic countries of the impact our consumer and industrial habits have on the environment.

Producers of gasoline powered cars will therefore have to convert their production to the manufacturing of electric, hybrid or biodiesel vehicles. The governments choice is positive not only for the environment but also for the general state of the economy and the citizens bank accounts: greater independence from countries exporting oil will work towards a more stable balance of payments in the long run, to creating new jobs in order to transform current infrastructures and to better and improved alternatives to gas, whose prices keep rising.

From the first half of 2009 gas, diesel and gpl prices have grown exponentially, specially for the former, thus making even more difficult the situation of gas powered car drivers who have seen the costs of driving their cars steadily increase in the last few years.

In this context it is not surprising that the electrical alternative be one of those the Norwegian government is designing incentives for, to be implemented in the next two years. Even if the new regulation does contemplate other energy sources, it looks like this country has already made its choice being one of the countries in Europe with a higher number of electric cars, around 4.000 as of today. The number is quite significant if we consider that the prices for these types of vehicles are still high. Nevertheless, less costly alternatives like electric car rentals are available for those that cannot afford such a purchase.

It is for these people that want to jump on the sustainable energy train but that do not possess the economic means to do so that alternatives like electric scooter and mini cars have been born, alternatives that are perfect for the city as they are easy to drive, safe and even easier to park due to their small sizes. The limitations associated with this size as autonomy and speed do not really have an effect in everyday city circulation. Moreover, many of these vehicles like the Biro electric car can be used without a drivers license.

As Norway has showed once again, the alternatives are valid and numerous, and the real obstacle is that of having the courage of projecting a deep change in the national industrial model, in the habits of the population to reach safer and more environmentally sustainable behaviors that make these eco-friendly options available to everyone.
