Electrical Power: A Boon Overlooked

Electrical Power: A Boon Overlooked

We often pay scant regard to things that come very easily to us. Take, for instance, electricity. From early morning to sleep time, our life highly depends on appliances run by electricity be it your toothbrush, shaving machine, tea / coffee maker, fan, air-conditioner, fridge, computer and scores of other things. Electrical power is thus the most noticeable yet most overlooked thing in our daily lives. We often waste electricity without realizing how much effort goes into its production and distribution.

You dont notice the intricate wiring system that carries electrical power to your switchboard because it is concealed beneath the walls. Before it reaches your home, electrical power travels through a network of highly complex distribution channel. The ultimate visible sign of that channel are the distribution lines or overhead power lines mounted on what we call power poles or utility poles.

Power poles are quiet sentinels that carry electric power from the point of distribution to the ultimate point of supply covering thousands of miles of journey. A damaged power pole is an invitation to disaster which calls immediate power pole repairs or power pole replacement.

The power poles carry electrical cables overhead out of the way of people and vehicles thus providing protection from electrical shocks and accidents. These are usually made of preservative-treated timber, concrete or steel. A variant knows as Stobie pole made of two steel posts with a slab of concrete between them is used in some parts of Australia. Standard power poles are usually between 35 to 50 ft long and buried 6 to 8 ft in the ground.

The many uses of power pole include temporary poles erected at construction sites and lighting poles for illuminating streets and private or public properties like parks, gardens and recreational areas.

Power poles, particularly made of wood have shorter life span as those are susceptible to effects of weather and rotting due to fungi and insects. In addition to rotting, power poles are often damaged due to natural reasons like strong winds, storms, flood and earthquakes and manmade reasons like vehicular accidents, rioting and arson.

In Australia, power pole repairs or power pole replacement are carried out by companies known as level 2 service providers. These are government approved and licensed electrical contractors having years of experience. They are equipped heavy tools with such as cranes, borers, hydraulic crimpers, cutters, drills, and hauling and rigging gears.
