Electromagnetic Lifters Can Extend Load Capacity
Electromagnetic Lifters Can Extend Load Capacity
Electromagnetic lifters can extend the lifting capacity over permanent lifting magnets. This makes them the most cost-effective magnetic lifter.
While permanent magnetic lifters are versatile, material handling devices that can be used to transport ferro-magnetic materials in excess of 2000 pounds, electromagnetic lifters can extend the lifting capacity even further. This makes them the most cost-effective magnetic lifter.
Electromagnets Extend Lift Capacity
Permanent magnetic lifters obtain their lifting force from permanent magnets embedded in the lifter module. While this gives them portability and failsafe operation, permanent magnets have a restricted lifting capacity based upon the rating of the lifter. To obtain a greater lifting capacity, for example, a different lifter would need to be used. Electromagnetic lifters do not have such absolute limitations.
Electromagnetic lifters use an energized electrical coil wound around a steel core within the lifter unit to generate a magnetic field. A D.C. controller or rectifier provides the excitation voltage to energize the magnet. The magnetic lifter's holding force is directly proportional to the coil voltage. An increase in voltage, increases current flow to the coil and creates a stronger magnetic field, thereby extending the lifting capacity. This ability allows the user more flexibility than a permanent magnet lifter affords.
But the extended lifting capacity of lifting electromagnets has a drawback, however. Unlike permanent magnets, electromagnets require the continuous application of electrical power to operate. Hence, power failures will de-energize the electromagnet and create a potential safety hazard for the worker and the surrounding lifting area. Power availability and reliability must be taken into account when selecting a type of magnetic lifter. If extended lifting capacities are crucial to an operation, and electromagnetic lifters are the choice, the lifter should be connected to an uninterruptible power supply to ensure an orderly release of the load and an orderly shutdown of the lifter and associated equipment until the power problem is resolved.
Added Advantage: Variable Lifting Capacity
Lifting electromagnets offer advantages in addition to very heavy load lifting capabilities. For small, thin loads in an application where one part of a stack of parts must be lifted, electromagnetic lifters are the optimal solution. Permanent magnets are not designed to lift only one piece from a stack of parts because they cannot vary their magnetic holding force to a low level (or the precise level needed by a particular application). In these applications, an electromagnetic lifter with variable voltage control allows the operator to adjust the magnetic strength and select only one piece from the stack.
Remote Operation
Permanent magnetic lifters are manually operated; they cannot be remotely controlled. When remote control operation is required via a machine control center or a crane's cab, electromagnetic lifters are the best solution. They can be controlled through a pendant switch or a remote control transmitter.
