Electronic Access Control Systems

What is meant by Electronic Access Control System?

Put simply, it is a term for controlling (i.e. allowing or restricting) access (entry) into a door or building by using an electronically based controller/hardware to operate an electric lock. This can mean a single front door or multiple doors throughout the whole premises.

The benefits:

Increase the integrity of your building.

Pro-actively prevent intruders from entering your premises.

Protect staff.

Prevent opportunist theft of small consumables: iPods, Laptops that may hold sensitive information.

Regulate and monitor entry/exit. Access Control Systems let authorised employees get in and out of various parts of your business while keeping others outthis can be the front door, a parking garage, a server room, personnel records room or any other sensitive/private area.

Simplify managementno need to replace lost keys, hunt down old keys from terminated employees or wonder who has access to which areas.

Keep an audit trail of who went where, and when (events log) with user-friendly software that can be administered from a central office.

Modular hardware means you can install one door today and add at a later stage. as and when funds/budgets become available.

Eliminate security patrolssaving money.

Integrate with Time & attendance.

Integration with CCTV.

A typical system consists of a door controller and a reader on the secure side of the door. Exit can be made by a simple exit button or another reader. It may be stand-alone or networked, dependant upon design and budget constraints. ISO are common now as they can be used for Access Control and ID badges with a card printer installed on a local PC.

Card swipe technology (where the card is passed through a reader head thus reading the strip on the card) is still used but does come with issues, namely the reader head getting dirty/abused/damaged over time. The card strip may also wear.

Most access control systems today are using proximity technology where the card is only passed in front of the reader, thus eliminating the wear and tear resulting in a more efficient and economical system. Higher security sites may employ smart technology cards and readers where more information is required and/or biometric readers.

A good installer should listen to your needs and requirements and build the system around you so that when fitted there is little or no disruption to your day-to-day work actions.

Final word: Whilst an Intruder Alarm system is excellent at detecting that someone is already INSIDE your property, an access control system stops them BEFORE they get there.
