Electronic Cigarettes: Getting Into The Mainstream

Electronic cigarettes are rapidly being adopted by quite a number of smokers around the world

. Formerly a niche product, electronic cigarettes are now entering the mainstream market and is performing well in terms of user adoption.

Electronic cigarettes were introduced in 2003. Eight years later, hundreds of websites and thousands of brick and mortar shops have sprouted like mushrooms in the world of commerce. Without true benefits and advantages to back it up, electronic cigarettes could not have achieved its remarkable market success. In fact, health professionals and medical practitioners in the mainstream TV health talk show The Doctors have tacitly endorsed electronic cigarettes as an excellent alternative to tobacco smoking. Electronic cigarettes were among the top health products to watch for according to the show's 2009 select list.

The rise in popularity of electronic cigarettes is hardly surprising. First, electronic cigarettes comprehensively addresses all the health issues associated with conventional tobacco smoking. Unlike tobacco smoke, the vapor produced by electronic cigarettes from a substance known as e-liquid, is completely clean and safe to inhale, such that users of electronic cigarettes can enjoy hundreds of e-liquid vapors in even places where smoking is strictly banned.

This is because the ingredients used in e-liquid are clean and certified safe by agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). E-liquid contains water, flavorings, and either one of two main bases: propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. All of these substances are commonly used in everyday foodstuffs such as candies and beverages. Meantime, the main bases are used in oral sprays such as nebulizers that are used by people with asthma. Both are approved safe by the FDA. This just means that e-liquid beats tobacco by a mile in terms of health benefits. With hundreds of flavors to choose from, e-liquid also beats tobacco in terms of taste. E-liquid flavors include apple, vanilla, cappuccino, rum, almond, cola, menthol, and daiquiri.

The fundamental selling point of electronic cigarettes is that they are meant to simulate the appearance, feel, taste, and whole experience of smoking without exposing the "smoker" to the detrimental effects caused by traditional tobacco smoking. In other words, electronic cigarettes constitute the single best answer to every smoker's dream: smoking a cigarette with rich full flavor but without the fatal side effects.

In addition to health benefits, electronic cigarettes are better products than traditional tobacco cigarettes in terms of environmental footprint. While tobacco products emit greenhouse gases and air pollutants, electronic cigarettes only release clean, water-based vapor.
