It seems a little ironic, but one way to cut back on smoking may, in fact, be a cigarette. Electronic cigarettes (also known as e cigarettes or e-cigs) have been growing in popularity since they were developed by a Chinese pharmacist in 2004. For smokers looking for a way to curb their harmful habit, e cigarettes might be the solution.

E cigarettes are a battery powered device fashioned to look like a cigarette and designed to release a nicotine vapor upon inhalation. E-cigs enable someone to smoke without actually burning tobacco. Thus, "smoking" without any "smoke". E-cigs can serve as a great alternative to tobacco cigarettes for smokers who want that dose of nicotine but don't want any of the detrimental health effects that come from inhaling the smoke.

E cigarettes are simple in their design. Each one has four working parts: a cartridge, an atomizer, a battery, and an LED light. The cartridge acts as the entire mouthpiece of the e cigarette. Within the cartridge is a liquid nicotine solution. This solution, sometimes called e-juice, comes in many different varieties and flavors. The varieties are what make e cigarettes unique. In addition to having tobacco and menthol flavors, others such as fruits, chocolate, and caramel flavors are available too. Some e-juices come without nicotine. The entire cartridge can be replaced or the e-juice can be refilled when it runs dry.

The e-juice is vaporized and inhaled through the means of an atomizer. The atomizer is powered by a simple battery. Many e cigarettes use rechargeable batteries, which makes them convenient to own. They're surprisingly versatile too, with e cigarette brands offering recharging options through an AC wall outlet, a car adapter, and even a USB port. Disposable e-cigs are also available.

One might be cautious about transitioning to an e cigarette because of the impression it gives to others. Are e-cigs as cool as tobacco cigarettes? Some might say so. E-cigs come in trendy looking packaging, and the e cigarette itself looks just like a tobacco cigarette. On the end of each e cigarette is an LED light which glows orange when air passes through it, mimicking the appearance of a lit cigarette. Suffice to say, e cigarettes do have their advantages to them, which may outweigh other concerns. E-cigs create no smoke, leave no ashes and they leave no butts behind to be lazily tossed on the ground.
