One of the hardest habits to quit is smoking. Any former or current smoker will verify that. Most smokers have tried to quit smoking at one time or another. Many of them fail because nicotine is so very addicting. Recently, however, there has been a technological breakthrough that may give some smokers hope to quit cigarettes or at least to cut down on the number of cigarettes they smoke. That breakthrough is the electronic cigarette. Only invented a couple of years ago, the electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette, has been a popular hit with smokers. Many of those smokers feel that "electronic smoking" is much better than real smoking. Technically, the electronic cigarette is not smoked at all. Instead, it is "vaped". That is because electronic cigarettes do not produce any smoke at all. They only produce a vapor that is inhaled. The fact that electronic cigarettes don't produce smoke is what most likely makes them safer than real cigarettes. Although there are many brands of e-cigarettes on the market, they are all designed pretty much the same. The main components of the electronic cigarette are a vaporizer, a liquid nicotine cartridge, a battery, and a Light Emitting Diode (LED). When a e-cigarette is inhaled, nicotine from the liquid cartridge is turned into a fine mist by the vaporizer, which is powered by a small battery. As the e-cigarette is being inhaled, the LED glows, mimicking the effect of a real cigarette. The electronic cigarette has been somewhat controversial. Some anti-smoking advocates object to the electronic cigarette on the basis that they have not been sufficiently tested. But, not every expert agrees with those anti-smoking advocates. Many health experts have stated that, as a real cigarette usually contains over 4,000 harmful chemicals, the electronic cigarette is almost certainly safer, as the vapor produced by it is almost all nicotine. Although nicotine is not completely safe, most experts think that it is the other chemicals in cigarettes that cause most of the harm to health. Furthermore, the smoke itself is harmful. As mentioned, the electronic cigarette does not produce smoke. Instead it produces vapor. Despite the controversy, many cigarette smokers are still choosing "electronic smoking" over real smoking. Many of those smokers have reported improvements in their health. And others have reported quitting smoking altogether. In short, while their is no solid statistical proof on the effectiveness of the electronic cigarette as smoking cessation aid, there is pretty strong anecdotal evidence concerning the electronic cigarette's effectiveness in helping smokers to avoid real cigarettes.
