Element of polygonal modelling

In the last article we analyzed basic elements of the polygon, now we're going to introduce the main concepts concerning the polygonal modelling to extend principles and related applications.

As we said in the previous tutorial, the 3D modelling is a process belonging to a larger sequence. Through these different steps, we can create 3D objects, interacting with them and seeing them in different ways.

The aim of the modelling, in particular polygonal modelling, is to be able to make 3D objects similar to the real objects (more or less complex), included organic shapes (f.e. characters).

The modelling is the first step; for this reason, it can exert influence (good or not) on the others steps. In this way, the object can be subjected to different changes before finalizing.

A good 3D modeller has to know notion and have many skills; just in this way, he can chose the best technique for his purpose.

A 3D model is good if its pipeline allows to the others professionals involved to manage the different steps concerning production (sculpting, creation, UV, texturing, rigging, etc.) and if it's possible change it in a very simple way.

Concerning creation of a 3D model by polygonal modelling, we can mention three steps:

- planning

- modelling

- finishing touch

The planning is a process to create and/or select the main elements to make a 3D object. We can use two-dimensional draws (architecture field), sketches (characters), pictures (virtual environment).

The modelling (I hope is useless to say it!) is the making of a 3D model.

The finishing touch is to add details to the model you made, by using different techniques, but we'll explain them in the next tutorial.
