There are certain design elements that all blogs need to have to keep readers happy, coming back, and spreading the word. Along with the rapid rise in the popularity of blogs and social networking sites there has also been an increase in the expectation of quality.
Another staple is to have a blog with a clean and consistent layout that is also appealing in design. Users have higher demands for quality and expect blogs that are easy to read, find what they are looking for, and to navigate.
If you look at some of the blogs that are among the more successful ones out there you will see recurring themes and elements and these elements are what you want to apply to your blog.
One of the key aspects to building a stable readership for your blog is to have various subscription options in areas that are easy to access. Give users the option of subscribing to your blog by RSS or E-mail for their updates. You can put these buttons in to the headers, sidebar, and at the bottom of each post.
Also make your blog stand out more by creating custom designed headers and try and stay away from using the pre-designed templates that scream amateur or at least stick to the more minimally designed ones available rather than the gaudy ones. This is where you have the opportunity to put a unique look in to your blog and set yourself apart from your competitors.
Here is a short list of elements you can customize to achieve this look. Areas like your logo, navigation buttons and categories, your RSS/Twitter Stats, how you present your subscription options, with the application of your search functionality, your social profile icons and avatars, and your banner spaces. There are others, but these should help you get started.
