Elements of Kitchen Design

There are many things to consider when designing a kitchen - floor plans or layout, cabinets, appliances, and lighting are just the tip of the iceberg. A new kitchen is one of the most rewarding gifts you can give yourself. A kitchen is the heart of a home, it is where you'll have late-night talks and casual celebrations along with preparing meals for your family and friends and the dreaded clean up afterwards. For these reasons and more you want to make sure your kitchen works for you and the activities you intend to have it participate in.

The first thing to consider in designing your kitchen is your budget. This will ultimately determine if you can have the kitchen of your dreams or just a functional kitchen that you can live with. It's possible to cut a lot of corners and keep the cost down by doing many things yourself. Your local building codes and your experience level will ultimately determine what you can do and what has to be hired out to a licensed contractor.

Your next step after you have figured out your budget is coming up with a floor plan or layout that will fill your needs. In designing a layout for your kitchen you first must decide how much space is available and how to use that space. You're going to need appliances like a stove and refrigerator at a minimum. Today's modern kitchens also incorporate dishwashers, microwave ovens and even trash compactors and ice machines. All these appliances have to be laid out in a manner that promotes ease from one to the other. For instance you don't want to have to walk across the room to put dishes from the sink into the dishwasher, or not have enough counter space to accommodate a dish rack if you don't intend on having a dishwasher.

After you have come up with a desired layout you can start looking at the materials needed and what works in your budget. Flooring, cabinets, counter tops, appliances and lighting are all things that need to be considered. The best and easiest for most people is to start at the floor and work your way up. Once you have a list of materials and a floor plan you can start putting your kitchen together. There are many helpful resources online and in home improvement stores to assist you in coming up with ideas and ultimately a kitchen design that fills your needs and fits in your budget.

The kitchen is not only a room that you will use every single day; it also takes more abuse that most of the other rooms in your house. As a result, every kitchen needs a little work eventually.
