Eligibility for Social Security Disability: Are You Eligible
?
Finding yourself disabled to the point that youre unable to work is an extremely difficult situation. No one opts to become physically incapacitated, but there is financial help through the federal government program, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Qualifying for SSDI can be a difficult process, but if you pass the test, the income youll garner from the program can help to maintain your financial security. You can file your application through your local Social Security Administration office or online.
First of all, you need to find out if you meet the initial minimum employment requirements. The Social Security Agency has a table online that will show you how to calculate your employment.
In order to qualify for SSDI payments, you must be under 65 years of age and your health condition must be expected to last for at least a year, or be expected to result in death. You must also have been continuously unable to work for a minimum of five months before you can begin receiving benefits. You must have paid into SSDI during your employment.
Your medical condition is the primary criteria for qualifying for SSDI. There are certain impairments that are deemed so serious as to automatically quality one for SSDI.
There are fourteen categories in the adult listing of impairments ranging from immune to musculoskeletal disorders. If your disability is listed, you have a very good chance of qualifying for benefits. If it isnt listed, a thorough assessment of your medical condition will be done in order to determine if its as severe as the impairments on the list.
Your claim for SSDI benefits must be substantiated with a large amount of documentation, including your Social Security card, your work history, proof of income, tax records and payroll contributions to SSDI. You should be able to show through your work history that youve had significant absences due to your impairment. Most importantly, you must provide comprehensive medical evidence substantiating that your impairment is serious enough to prevent you from maintaining gainful employment. This medical evidence will include doctors visits, medications, medical tests, therapies, and hospitalizations. You may be required to visit a third-party physician. The more medical evidence you can provide to prove your claim, the better the chances youll qualify for SSDI.
Your claim is reviewed by the State Disability Determination Services (SSDS) in your area. It usually takes a minimum of ninety days to review your claim, but it can take up to a year. If youre lucky, your claim will be approved at the initial level, but more often than not, it will be denied. If you receive a denial, you should request an appeal. It can take anywhere from ninety days to over a year to complete the appeal process, but its worth it to gain access to this important federal safety net guaranteeing your financial well-being.
