The requirements of this race stipulate that the horses must make their way up this particular hill thrice within the course of the 6400m race.

When the first event and meeting was held at Ellerslie in 1874, the track was well outside the city boundaries. It took considerable time for Aucklanders to reach the tracks. Today of course the city has widened its boundaries to encompass the race track and it's now only a short distance away from the city's central business district. Ellerslie Racecourse is also popular as being the place where the very first automatic totalisator was installed in 1913. Champion racehorses such as Bonecrusher, Kindergarten, Il Tempo and Balmerino have all made history at some point or the other within these tracks. Ellerslie is also a venue for the Auckland Cup Week and the Summer Carnival important racing carnivals in New Zealand.
