Email Monitoring Is Used By Thieves And The Law Alike
You probably were already aware, but your email is not completely private
. Especially the emails that you send and receive at work. Most businesses use email monitoring to make sure that their employees are not doing anything illegal. It also lets your boss know if you are putting in a full day's work or if you are goofing off and forwarding emails to your friends.
This is an invasion of privacy right? Well most companies let their employees know through a memo or in a handbook of employee rules. There is often just a very small sentence in a very big paragraph that tells you that your email is not private. This is utilized by corporations so that they are protected legally from the wrongdoings of their employees. The basic rule of thumb is to not send an email without first considering who will be reading it; that includes your boss and the people that work in the IT department.
The practice of monitoring allows the company to protect itself. Are there any good uses for a monitoring system? A lot of people have started checking emails of their children at home. As kids are starting to use the internet at younger ages it can be used to protect them from any harmful information that lurks on the internet.
Parents that are concerned about their child's safety can make sure that they are not being approached by bad people. Many parents of teenage children also make use of the practice to make certain that their children are not getting into drugs. While it is technically an invasion of privacy, children under eighteen years of age are not considered adults. They are under the protection of their parent or guardian.
All government facilities monitor email. This has been in place since the first email left from a government computer. The information is stored and can actually be searched.
Now that you are completely paranoid and paying attention; consider how little privacy is actually in the world. Does it make it a safer world to know what people are sending to one another? It can in many cases.
Law enforcement agencies have for a long time been able to obtain warrants to check on emails of suspects. Emails can be used as evidence in trials. So, there can be a righteous use of this technology. However, many unscrupulous people can use the technology for very bad purposes. They can check your email accounts for passwords or credit cards or just to know when you are going to be out of town. This type of malicious software normally appears on your computer via a virus.
There is a fine line between good and evil when it comes to most things. Email monitoring is used by both law abiding people as well as criminals. It can be used as a safety measure and as a weapon. This logic can also be applied to the use of a gun. The purpose of this tool is determined by the wielder.
