Embargoed Press Release: A Threat Which Can Be Controlled

Anyone in around the Press Release business must be aware of the term Press Embargo or the News Embargo

. For others who are not quite aware of the same, it basically refers to situation or an agreement between a client issuing an information (a press release), i.e. the source of the news and a news organization (a newspaper company, a television news channel, radio station, online news website, et cetera) whereby the latter is requested to not to release the information and make it a news in the public domain before a specified time or date.

The underlying aspect of this agreement is that if the news is broken out before the specified date and time, the news agency would be denied to know more about reports of any further developments that would be taking place in future. This is the way a source of the press release or the main client itself would be retaliating under such circumstances. The other important aspect of a press embargo is that it maintains the required match between the time of the news being broken out and actual time of the development which was to be targeted by the press release in the first place.

Embargoed Press Releases are often used by the business houses that are looking forward to launch a new product, medical journals, government and private companies when issuing tenders for different projects, a senior government official about to announce any major public policy, et cetera. The news agencies are given the knowledge of such future developments in advance so that they get ample amount of time to know more about all the aspects of a press release (a free press release in some cases) and thereby prepare the reports along with 360 degree news coverage at the time of actual announcement date because there is no point breaking a special news which is not backed by good enough facts and information from the source itself.

But there is a catch here. Generally, the Press embargo is in practice if the news organization has signed a legally binding agreement with the client who wants the news to be released in future. Otherwise, in case of no such agreement, the journalists dont have any obligation to honor it and can go in for an early scoop and enhancing its market share. Henceforth, the Press Embargoes have been known to reduce the inaccuracy in the news release because they reduce the chances of the news houses to cut corners in the industry and get a jump over their competitors.

However, the breaking of the News embargoes by the news organizations is not a permanent threat. Because having done so (either by a miscommunication in the news room or intentionally to cut through the competition), the news outlet would be under a strict scanner by the source/client and could be devoid of such information in advance for a long time period in future. As it is a pure case of the breach of trust on the part of the client, the client will look out for the other options in future. And hence, the authenticity of the client-news outlet relationship is maintained.
