Several thousand years ago, Waikiki was part of an extensive ahupua`a, or ancient land division, that stretched inland from the ocean towards the Ko`olau mountains. Along the highest peaks, the rains of the great god Kane would fall, feeding cascading waterfalls and wending streams that seemed to flow with a timelessly quality through the Waikiki plains. Alas, Waikiki flourished with fresh water springs. Hence, there is the translation of Waikiki as "spouting waters".

Waikiki's first settlers were ingenious engineers. They harvested the wetland resources of the area and produced a land teeming with loko i`a (fishponds) and lo`i (taro paddies). Inland ponds were filled with a variety of marine life, and forested valleys provided an abundance flora and fauna. One of the largest ponds was the Ka`ihikapu, a 12-acre pond in the area known as Kalia.

When the land was still in its natural state, there existed a pond about a hundred yards. This pond was connected to the ocean by a stream, which ran under the present day Saratoga Road.

In ancient Hawaii,people with a spiritual or physical ailment would come to the pond in search of healing. A kahuna, or priest, would place a lei limu kala around their neck, and instruct them to submerge themselves in the healing waters of the pond. When the lei came off and floated downstream, it was said that the afflicted ones were healed. It was for this particular ceremony that the area was called Kawehewehe, which literally means "the removal."

Long gone are the ancient ponds of Waikiki and Kalia.
