The emerald is a stone that is said hold mystical powers

It is said that because of its green color, that it is healing for the eyes, as well as having the ability to fight off mental illnesses and neurological disorders. It has the power to ward off evil spirits; it is a promoter of good fortune. It is also a symbol of rebirth and youth, and is a stone that is ideal to have around during childbirth. In the ancient world, the emerald was said to be attained from Upper Egypt as early as 2000BC. Such mining of the gem is identified in the time of both Alexander the Great and Cleopatra. As Cleopatra was avid about the gem, there exists, to this day, Cleopatra's Mines, which came to light around 1817; their location is on the cost of the Red Sea.

The 16th century saw emeralds via Spanish explorers, who thus discovered the stone via the Inca and Aztecs. India is a country also attuned to the gem; they inscribed emeralds with sacred inscriptions and used them for talismans. In today's time, it is Zambia, Colombia, and Brazil that produces emeralds. Other countries include Russia, Austria, and Norway. It is a stone that can be found in a range of green colors, which is a result of the chromium and vandiume elements found within it. Sometimes emeralds will give off a yellowish or bluish overtone. As emeralds will loose their color in strong heat, strong care should be taken to keep it away from sudden temperature changes.
