The emergency sirens on emergency vehicles perform such a service to blind or partially sighted people. A blind or partially sighted person may not be aware there is an emergency up ahead and that there are emergency vehicles in attendance. But the sound of the emergency siren would immediately alert them to the danger and give them time to avoid the scene or pass it safely.

Sighted people give little thought to those of us who are not so lucky to have 20:20 vision. However there are a substantial number of blind or partially sighted people in every one of our cities, and we need to cater for their needs along with others needs. Most of us will see a flashing light up ahead, and we are lucky in that respect. A blind or partially sighted person still needs the same amount of warning to enable them to react to the situation in a way that best suits them as an individual. Therefore, the emergency sirens are crucial to keep people informed of hazards and situations.

All emergency vehicles will have a highly visible set of emergency lighting and very loud audible emergency sirens. Sirens are a highly effective warning for all of us, and they are difficult to ignore. Interestingly, humankind has always needed sirens or warning sounds. No matter how far you go back man would have had some form of audible warning of danger, whether it is a verbal noise or banging rocks against each other. If someone or something is not in your line of vision, you need something audible that can warn you of danger.

At its most fundamental level the emergency sirens are basically something that makes a noise. A Scottish physicist John Robinson was the first person to invent the 'siren' although Robinson's siren was actually a musical instrument. What Robinson's siren did was power some of the pipes in an organ. They had a stopcock that opened and closed a pneumatic tube. Therefore, the emergency sirens have been with us sometime albeit in a slightly different form to that we know today. The majority of the sirens used today are electric and have normally around a 100 watts output, which is extremely loud.

Many of the emergency sirens in use today will have a PA system so emergency response personnel can direct or warn people verbally. All will come with different sounds from a simple air horn blast to the wail we commonly hear on our streets. Many emergency sirens come with facility to connect to CB radio and to match time with a flashing lightbar. The siren needs to be versatile as they are used in different situations depending on the vehicle. The combination of the emergency sirens, LED lightbars and beacons on emergency vehicles ensure they can be seen and heard by all of us
