Emergent Readers Should Pick Up Right Books
Learning to read is one of the biggest milestones in a child's life
. It opens up whole new worlds to them. It changes the dynamic of a "bedtime story". It gives them self-confidence. Provides them with an activity that is way better for their intellectual development than watching tv or playing video games. Beginning readers are just starting to read independently. They still enjoy picture books, but want to move on to more grown-up fare. Simple sentences, lively illustrations and chapter breaks help ease kids into the reading process.
But be very careful to pick a book to practice independent reading. A right book is not too hard for the child to read. It is the place where your child is challenged to learn in the book, but is not bored with it, nor frustrated either. Giving a new reader a book that is too difficult to read will only serve to diminish confidence. How you can tell if a book is too easy or too hard? If the student "flies" through the reading, or on the contrary, if he or she struggles every few words and wants to give up, then the book choice is not just right. Also, your child should be able to briefly tell you what the story was about in one or two sentences. If he or she cannot, then the reading was not comprehended.
When your kids are little, the best way to help them read is both simple and fun: show them you love books and provide plenty of them at home. Some children may have special affection for phonics sets and readers, but more often were talking about books that parents and kids read together for pure enjoyment. But what is most important is to help children fall in love with reading.
Beginning readers need books with a controlled vocabulary, books that were specifically developed for children to read to themselves. Many books those are suitable for listening to have too difficult a vocabulary for independent reading. Take the time to review the selection of available books so that you can choose a book that suits both your child's interests and reading level. These books motivate kindergarten children by creating an atmosphere of fun and enthusiasm, providing opportunities for child-directed instruction, and facilitating the needs of English language learners and struggling readers learning alongside their peer
