There once was an AI test that posited success based upon an encounter with AI and a human being. If a human being walked away unable to say whether their companion during the test was human or not, this would imply all sorts of lofty attributes to AI consciousness. Well, unfortunately for many excited scientists of the last generation, data is rabidly showing that things aren't that simple. But, to the merit of such hopefuls, things will indeed be bizarre.

The day that you may not be able to tell an android from a real human is coming faster than you might think. I doubt that the day in which you could 'live' with an android and not know is coming anytime soon, but in all serious I believe that day will eventually come too, and it leaves us with many uncomfortable questions.

As real human beings, we mask our emotions in relation to others all the time. Not saying what we 'really' think is normal. It's no wonder many of us feel so isolated and lonely: we are each a social animal that hides most of its inner world. Furthermore, for now anyway, we lack telepathic and true empathetic abilities. We only really experience our internal world and best makes guesses about others and sympathize. So it's not surprising that as complex as we are it won't be hard to develop sophisticated programs that outwardly 'act' like us.

Sophisticated androids will make for some very unusual relationships in the future. While they will be presumably incapable of bonding to us in a true spiritual sense, they will excel at mimicking it. And some of us will certainly bond strongly with them, which will, in the end, ultimately lead to terrible disappointment and loneliness in many cases of human-android attachments. But perhaps this danger will be buffered by the fact that androids will certainly be owned and not free; you'd have to buy one though I suppose one clever enough could 'pirate' one.
