Employment Background Checks - Seeing The Unseeable
There's only one thing more challenging and problematic for small and medium businesses
carrying out pre-employment background checks than finding problems. Not finding problems.
When presented with a CV employers will obviously carry out a reasonable number of background checks to make sure that the information is accurate. In some cases the level of responsibility which comes with the position being applied for is fairly low, and doesn't warrant an excessive amount of background checking.
However, it is still important to have a good idea of who you are actually employing, as well is being clear on whether they are legally entitled to work in the UK. For positions where there is a greater degree of responsibility then it is obviously critical that extremely thorough pre-employment checks are carried out.
A worryingly high number of employers have admitted to finding significant inaccuracies in the majority of CVs they have received. In some cases these inaccuracies may simply be an oversight or innocent error, perhaps with a slightly incorrect date attributed to a previous employment position.
In other cases inaccuracies may relate to the level of responsibility, degree of experience or grade of qualification gained by the applicant in the past. This may well be an oversight, but in most cases it is more likely to be that people are embellishing or exaggerating on their CV in order to improve their chances of being chosen for the job.
But the problem for businesses isn't finding things wrong with a CV. The real problem is not finding a problem. Why is this the case? Whilst it may be that the applicant has been thoroughly honest and accurate throughout, these days it is extremely easy to fake qualifications, and even an employment history.
It is very easy these days to purchase bespoke fake documentation online, to purchase fake qualifications online, to establish fake businesses, and even create what appears to being a business with a telephone number which redirects to a colleague, friend or family member. This isn't being fanciful, it is a daily fact.
Whilst it may be unlikely that anybody applying for the position of an office cleaner is likely to go to so much trouble in order to gain employment, in situations where people are applying for a job which will entail a high level of responsibility or access to sensitive data it is essential to establish beyond all reasonable doubt that the information provided on the CV is completely true, and that there is nothing else which you need to know that has been cleverly hidden.
The solution is often not to invest vast amounts of your time and money trying to carry out these pre-employment checks. The answer instead is to take advantage of one of the agencies able to offer a professional background checking service. Not only will they be able to accurately provide advice on the level of background screening necessary for the particular position in case, but with their skills, contacts, technology and experience they are able to carry out the background checks thoroughly enough to help banish any concerns you may have regarding errors or inaccuracies, no matter how subtle.
