Leather comes from many different sources and although we generally regard it as coming from cattle, in Australia it comes from the farming of a native bird, emu boots, emu is a source of leather though not for mass production of any one particular product because it has a unique patterned texture, and it is not the most commonly found the source of leather.

The bird was a source of food for early settlers in Australia and the local aborigines, using poison or netting would hunt them. For the aborigine it was obviously a source of food but every part had a use with oil extracted from the fat to be used for various things, the skin and feathers others while the bone could be honed into various sharp instruments and tools.

The aborigine thought little of the hunting of the bird merely for sport which they saw as wasteful and cruel. The native Australians hunted to survive, an entirely different thing.

The wild bird is now protected though they had been a target for farmers where they appeared to be damaging their livelihoods. There were several confrontations in the 1930s when farmers sought to cull the nuisance and there are examples of an aggressive response at times and with their sharp three pronged feet, they were to be avoided when roused.

There are more in Australia than at the time of those confrontations but some small pockets are endangered due to their size, and the habitat changing through cultivation or temperature. Tasmania lost its subspecies one of four originally and New South Wales now faces a dwindling population.

The first call for protection had come from the nineteenth century when it was observed that few survived around Sydney but in fact the law which enshrines their protection is fairly recent, only just over a decade ago.

The bird was first commercially farmed twenty years ago in Australia though commercial farming is not confined to the Continent. Although not indigenous to North America, farms have sprung up in the United States, and smaller commercial activity takes place in places as far afield as Peru and China.

Aside from being a source of food, the oil from their fat is valuable; the leather produced from their skins and their eggs is used for crafts and decoration. The oil is used both in cosmetics and medicine and dietary supplements. There is little scientific evidence of the oils properties but nevertheless it is used extensively. The meat is however low in fat for food consumption and low in the cholesterol, such a factor in heart disease.

The leather is distinctive due to the fact that it has had feathers plucked from it. It is used for generally small items as a result, perhaps wallets, purses and similar things though it has lent its name to emu boots, emu being a very identifiable thing in relation to Australia.
