Encouraging A Child To Work With A Tutor
Working with a tutor is something many children need to do from time to time
. It does not mean they are stupid. It does not mean they have a learning disability, though this may be something to address if it is a problem. Rather, they just need help with a subject or even a part of subject. Since most subjects build up over time, with each new concept overlapping the last one, it is critical to get your child's foundation set right. That is when tutors can be an ultimate resource. If you want to provide one to your child but you are worried he or she will not approve of the process, there are some steps to make it an easier process.
Don't Make It A Threat
One of the worst things you can do is to say that working with a tutor is going to happen if the child does not get his or her grades up. In other words, if you make this process a punishment for not getting good grades, the child will despise the process from the start. Instead, make it an opportunity. Discuss how you have an idea that can help you child to get more help with the subject of their choice.
Do Make It A Group Effort
Sometimes, children are scared to be alone with someone they do not know. Though most children instinctively trust teachers, they still may be worried about the person they do not know sitting across the table from them. Instead of making this a scary situation, make it one that you do with your child. Plan to not get involved in the learning experience, but plan to be in the area. For example, if the professional comes to your home, be in the kitchen while they are working in the living room. You are close so your child feels at ease.
Make It A Discussion Point
As your child does develop his or her skills and improvement is seen, it is a great idea to reward this type of success. Talk about the good things he or she is experiencing. Ask about what they learned. What you may notice is that your child's confidence level is going up not just as he or she gets better grades but at home, too. Most children want to do well and with the right tools, they can.
A tutor can be a fantastic opportunity for your child to fully develop his or her education. Do not limit your child's ability to grasp a concept because you are worried he or she will not approve of having tutors.
