Encouraging Kids to Eat Healthy
We are faced with food choices every day
We are faced with food choices every day. There are the foods that are good for use and help us stay healthy. Then there are foods that taste good, but have very little nutritional value. Unfortunately, the manufacturers of delicious but unhealthy foods have very large advertising budgets so it is hard to convince kids that they aren't good for them. But you can teach your kids the advantages of good nutrition in spite of all the hype toward junk food.
Most of the time we simply tell our kids to eat certain foods because it is good for them. On the flip side, we tell them not to eat other things because it isn't good for them. But have you ever explained to your child why it is or isn't good for them?
Kids are bombarded with conflicting reports on their favorite foods. Parents tell them it isn't healthy, but commercials tell them it is packed with vitamins. They remember Mom & Dad telling them it wasn't nutritious, but here is the television telling them it is full of good nutrition. Who is right? This is where teaching your kids the basics of good nutrition can be helpful.
Teach your children about the food pyramid. Show them how many servings of each food group is recommended each day. Perhaps make a large version of the pyramid and cut each section out like a puzzle. Talk about each section and let the kids assemble it. Show them that the foods at the top of the pyramid should be eaten sparingly. Make sure you explain in their terms what foods belong in each group. Use foods in your family diet to help them understand what each group represents. Explain that many sweets and treats that they want to eat belong in the top of the pyramid, so you shouldn't eat a lot of them.
Another good method to teach kids the food pyramid is to make a pyramid out of food. On your dining room table or a large counter, put out the appropriate servings of each food group and arrange them like a pyramid. This will give even young children a good visual of the basics of good nutrition. In addition, this will help teach them the correct serving size of most foods.
If we work to teach our kids the basics of good nutrition and continue to build on that foundation, we can help kids learn to make good food choices. Parents can't be with their kids 24 hours a day, so making sure they have a good foundation in nutrition basics can help give you peace of mind about their nutritional choices.
