Endometriosis Causes and Symptoms and Natural Home Remedies to Treat Endometriosis

The word endometriosis comes from the Greek endon meaning "within" and the Greek metra meaning "uterus", akin to Greek meter meaning "mother". The word osis comes from the Greek and/or Latin suffix meanings "affected with, condition, abnormal process". The Medilexicon medical dictionary says endometriosis is "Ectopic occurrence of endometrial tissue, frequently forming cysts containing altered blood." (ectopic = not in its proper place, not in its proper position).

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Typical symptoms of endometriosis may include excessive pelvic pain during menstruation, abnormal bleeding, infertility, and pelvic pain that occurs at other times such as when a woman ovulates or urinates. Some women may exhibit no signs at all.

Cause of Endometriosis

Some researchers believe that the female blood carries endometrial cells to other parts of the body. Despite the fact that more and more women are becoming affected by endometriosis, there have been few studies done to come up with an exact cause of the problem.

Another theory states that retrograde menstruation is the cause of endometriosis. Retrograde menstruation is when blood and tissue flows backwards during menstruation and goes through the fallopian tubes. The endometrial tissue than attaches itself to other parts of the body and continues to grow.

An impaired immune system is believed by some researchers to be a cause of endometriosis. This theory states that the body fails to destroy the endometrial tissue. Many researchers consider endometriosis to be an auto-immune disease and this theory may be the most realistic due to women developing other auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and lupus, while also suffering from endometriosis.

Home Remedies for Endometriosis

Listed below are some of the home remedies for endometriosis:

1. Ginger Tea as a Treatment of Endometriosis: It is suggested that ginger can reduce the level of prostaglandin hormone (that activates cramps, pain, etc) in the body. This can help in treating menstrual cramps and pain. One may drink a cup of ginger tea twice every day for about a month.

2. Warm Bath or Heating Pad for the Treatment of Endometriosis: Taking a warm bath can relieve muscle spasms and alleviate cramping pain, thereby treating endometriosis. As an alternative, one might also place a heating pad on the lower abdomen. This can also relieve cramping pain of endometriosis.

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acid Fish as a Treatment of Endometriosis: Experts suggest that omega-3 fatty acid fishes such as salmon, mackerel, herrings, etc can reduce the level of prostaglandin hormone in the body. This can help in treating endometriosis. One might include such fishes in regular diet to treat endometriosis.

4. Calcium-Rich Food for the Treatment of Endometriosis: One might take about 800 mg of calcium in their daily diet to treat endometriosis. Some calcium-rich foods are nuts, milk, salmon, tofu, spinach, broccoli, baked beans, etc. It is suggested that deficiency of calcium especially during menstruation can lead to muscular cramps. Calcium can treat muscular cramp caused due to endometriosis by maintaining normal muscle tone.

Diet for Endometriosis

Eat fish; it contains omega-3 fatty acids which help in suppressing prostaglandin production. Avoid caffeine, sugar, red meat and alcohol. Avoid all dairy products. Avoid fried foods and processed foods. Eat vitamin B rich food. Eat a low fat and fiber rich vegetarian diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, salads, flax seed oil and cereals are good sources of fiber.
