Endurance Of The Historic Kilt In The Modern Day
Kilt is one of the most enduring and loved traditional costume that lives through our modern times
. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, The word kilt comes from a verb of Scandinavian origin to kilt, formerly meaning "to gird up; to tuck up (the skirts) round the body", itself. It is essentially a knee length skirt worn by boys and men with pleats at the rear. Originated in the 16th century, in the high lands of Scotland, made of woolen cloth, the dress is recognized across the world for its uniqueness of pattern and style. The garment belongs to the Celtic (and more specifically Gaelic) heritage and its distinguished by its tartan pattern. The kilt used to be a ritualistic dress in Scotland on Occasions such as Highland games and sports events, though now it has evolved into informal male costume in the recent times. Such has been the rooted appeal of the
kilt that people now like to keep it in their wardrobes for day to day wear. Infact the fashion enthusiasts have turned it into a style wear of sorts, thats lapped by many.
The beginnings of the kilt was in the form of great kilt or the belted plaid, which was a full-length garment with its upper part serving as shoulder or head covering. Thomas Rawlinson, by an English Quaker from Lancashire in the 1720s developed the version of the modern day kilt, which was called the philibeg or small kilt, also known as the walking kilt. The purpose of the small kilt was to have the workers of the MacDonnells of Inverness engaged in logging, charcoal manufacture and iron smelting to wear something less cumbersome and unwieldy.
There are many variants of
kilts, which include the original costume itself or its modified version coming out generally in the tartarn pattern. The other variety is those worn by the Irish pipe bands found in single solid colour. Variants of the Scottish kilt are also prevalent in other Celtic nations, the Welsh cilt and the Cornish cilt. The style of the conventional kilts has been adapted in form of other skirts too, especially for skirts for girls uniform.
In the modern day, the Scottish kilt is worn with formal evening wear. The distinguishing feature of the Scottish kilt is the uniqueness of design, its construction of designs. This is the description of the conventional kilts. The modern kilts in fad are a tailored garment which can be wrapped around the body at the natural waist. It is usually wrapped from the left side running to the right around the front and back and across the front again to the opposite side. The wrap around can be fastened with straps and buckles on both ends. The inside strap passes through a slit in the waistband to be buckled on the outside, so as to give a stylish fastened look on the wearers body.
